“It was the satirist H.L. Mencken who said that “democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” I’m more optimistic than the famously cynical Mencken about the intelligence of my fellow citizens, and, as someone who grew up elsewhere but is now proud to call this City and State home, I have always been impressed that Missourians’ reputation for stubbornly forming their own opinions is well deserved.”
