YLS Event at the Branson Landing a Success

In an effort to increase the involvement of attorneys who practice in small town areas, The Young Lawyers' Section Council sponsored an event at Bar Louie on the Branson Landing on Thursday, August 16, 2007. The event was primarily attended by attorneys from the Springfield and Branson areas, although all young lawyers from District 11 were invited. In addition to refreshments provided by Bar Louie, the attorneys in attendance were able to hear from the President of the Missouri Bar and the Chief Judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District. Bar President Ron Baird spoke of some of the challenges facing the non-partisan court plan, and gave a brief history of the plan and the judicial selection process in Missouri. The Honorable Gary W. Lynch, who was an attorney and judge in Bolivar, Missouri, before his appointment to the Court of Appeals, provided words of wisdom aimed at the young lawyers, encouraging them to build strong relationships with their family members and colleagues, and to keep a strong anchor to guide them in their lives. The attorneys attending the event, especially those from the Branson area, were pleased to have such high-profile speakers supporting the event.

In addition to the speakers, the attorneys had a chance to socialize with one another, as the attorneys were from a variety of practice areas, and might not ordinarily have the opportunity to become acquainted with one another. "Having the Young Lawyers' Social here in Taney County was a great chance to get to some of our districts' rural attorneys together with those from Springfield," said Joe Allen, a young lawyer in Taney County who helped to organize the event. "New relationships were formed and everyone had a great time at the Branson Landing. The Taney County Bar hopes to have more events here in the future." The YLS Council was pleased to have such a great turnout, and hopes the event will grow and become an annual tradition.
