Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish LLC is pleased to announce the addition of Dennis L. Horner and Jeffrey J. Carey, both serving as of counsel, as well as Raymond Salva, Jr. to the firm. The additions of Horner and Carey expand the firm’s geographic footprint to now include Lee’s Summit and Olathe, Kansas.

Horner is a seasoned litigator, practicing law in Kansas since 1974 and specializes in workers’ compensation law, personal injury and wrongful death.

For nearly 20 years, Carey has focused on personal injury and wrongful death claims. In 2014, he received the Legal Champion’s Award from Missouri Lawyer’s Weekly for his work on a federal corruption case and in support of the initiative petition process.

Salva, Jr. received his J.D. from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2013 and his areas of practice include civil litigation, personal injury and product liability.

McDowell Rice Smith & Buchanan, PC, is proud to announce that Corby W. Jones and William C. Odle have joined the firm as shareholders, bringing their sports law practice to the firm.  Together, they will continue to practice in all aspects of sports law, white collar defense and government investigations, and litigation.

Jones represents the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) on matters involving student-athlete eligibility, amateurism, student-athlete health and welfare, and civil rights. Additionally, he serves as counsel to the NCAA on legislative and governance matters and assisted in the development and implementation of amendments to the Division I enforcement program.

Prior to his intercollegiate and amateur sports representation, Jones served as a National Football League Players Association certified contract advisor, negotiating both endorsement and player contracts with NFL teams and apparel and training companies.  He also has substantial experience defending premises liability, general tort liability and personal injury claims, and representing developers and investors in all phases of acquisition, ownership, operation and disposition of real property.

Before earning his law degree, Jones was an NCAA Division I student-athlete at the University of Missouri, where he was an all-conference selection at quarterback, as well as a National Football Foundation National Scholar Athlete. He played professionally in the NFL and Canadian Football League, and was inducted into the University of Missouri – Columbia Intercollegiate Hall of Fame in 2003. He also worked as a college football analyst for the Fox Sports Networks.  He earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law, and holds a B.A. degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia.

Odle is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, focusing on issues relating to amateur and intercollegiate athletics.  He has represented sports clients in numerous high-profile cases, including antitrust, defamation, civil rights, intellectual property and business torts. Odle’s clients include colleges and universities, non-profit associations and school districts, and also the NCAA, which he has successfully defended in cases involving student-athlete eligibility, amateurism, drug testing, student-athlete health and welfare, civil rights and antitrust claims.

Odle also serves as outside counsel to NCAA Presidential Working Groups and assisted in the development and implementation of amendments to the NCAA Division I enforcement program. He regularly counsels clients on association law and governance issues, management of emerging risks in the sports industry, and public policy.  Odle earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and holds a B.A. degree from the University of Kansas.

Diane L. Bellquist, of Joseph, Hollander & Craft LLC, is the newly elected president-elect of the Topeka Bar Association. Bellquist has been a member of the board of directors of TBA since 2011, most recently serving as the organization’s treasurer. She was honored as the TBA’s Outstanding Young Lawyer in 2012 and is a past president of the TBA’s Young Lawyers’ Division.

“I’m truly honored by the vote of confidence from my colleagues as president-elect,” Bellquist said. “I’ve been a proud member of the TBA since 2004. Our organization sponsors numerous worthwhile projects to support the legal profession and the judicial branch. It is a privilege to be part of such an influential organization.”

Bellquist joined Joseph, Hollander & Craft in 2014 and practices primarily in the area of professional licensure. Bellquist – who has more than 10 years’ experience working for regulatory agencies of the State of Kansas – utilizes her government experience to defend licensed individuals and entities before their respective regulatory boards. As the former assistant general counsel for the Kansas Board of Healing Arts and former general counsel to the Office of the State Bank Commissioner, she has extensive experience with both healthcare and financial licensing and regulatory laws.

Bellquist is a barrister in Topeka’s Sam A. Crow Inns of Court. She is also a past president of the Women Attorneys Association of Topeka.

Bellquist received her bachelor’s degree from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota, with dual majors in criminal justice and paralegal studies, and earned her J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law. She is a member of the Professional Liability Defense Federation and holds an attorney certification from the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards.

With 14 years of military service, Bellquist holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the Kansas Air National Guard.
