Missouri Bar President Patrick Starke Speaks to Hundreds of Lawyers at Luncheon
Missouri Bar President Patrick Starke is wrapping up remarks to hundreds of lawyers gathered at today’s Fall Committee Meeting luncheon. Twenty bar committees/sections met this morning, many offered CLE programs. Another five committees are meeting this afternoon. The Board of Governors begin meeting at 1:30 p.m.

Does Your Law Firm Accept Credit Card Payments? Discuss New IRS Requirements With Your Processing Company Before January 1 to Avoid Possible 28 Percent Withholding Penalty
Warning SignAs of January 1, 2012, credit card processors will now report to the IRS through a Form 1099 all gross credit card transactions processed for businesses (including lawyers and law firms). And starting in January 2013, the IRS will begin imposing a 28 percent withholding penalty on all credit card transactions, if a business or firm’s taxpayer identification number (TIN) and the legal name on each account (whether operating or IOLTA) does not match with IRS records. Bankruptcy Filings Down in Fiscal Year 2012
Bankruptcy cases filed in federal courts for FY 2012 dropped 14 percent from the same period in FY 2011. Filings also dropped between FY 2010 and FY 2011, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. (Details)

A case-by-case analysis of records covering more than 400,000 defendants found significant variations in the criminal caseloads of individual federal judges for the nation as a whole and in some instances among the judges serving in the same courthouse. (More)

John JohnstonKCLSA...the association for legal professionals selected John Johnston as its “Boss of the Year.” The award was presented during the KCLSA Annual Bosses’ Appreciation Night.  KCLSA, which is affiliated with the National Association of Legal Professionals, is celebrating 60 years of service to the legal community.
