Gov. Jay Nixon has named former Missouri Supreme Court Judge Ann Covington to the University of Missouri Board of Curators. Judge Covington’s appointment, which is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate, is for a term ending January 2019. (More)
The 13th Judicial Circuit Court earlier this week elected Judge Jodie Capshaw Asel as presiding judge effective at the end of January. Judge Asel succeeds Judge Gary Oxenhandler, who served as presiding judge since March 2010. (More)
Starts in KC March 25, Civil and Domestic Cases in Independence March 4
Starting in March, Jackson County will become the largest circuit to date to begin utilizing paperless electronic filing. Computer filings will be mandatory for attorneys in civil and domestic cases. Paper filings will continue to be used in criminal, probate, and juvenile matters, as well as in pro se filings. (More)

Missouri Bar President Pat Starke spoke about his plans to increase and organize the connectivity between The Missouri Bar and the Legislature during a presentation earlier this week at the Springfield Metropolitan Bar luncheon. Called Amicus Lex or A-Lex for short, the initiative is a way for lawyers to reach out to individual legislators in an organized fashion, and when appropriate, offer insights on matters that lawyers collectively agree upon.

Supreme Court of Missouri Chief Justice Richard B. Teitelman will deliver his 2013 State of the Judiciary address to a joint session of the Missouri General Assembly on Wednesday, January 23.

Hocker Awards, presented annually to three young lawyers––one each from St. Louis, Kansas City and outstate Missouri––who have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in trial advocacy. Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich earlier this week released a report on Missouri's Second Injury Fund, recommending that lawmakers and the governor decide if the fund’s statutory purpose is still public policy and take appropriate actions to reduce, eliminate or re-capitalize the fund. (More)
