From the Chair: A Call Out to Young Lawyers – It’s Time to Defend the Missouri Plan

Jason Rew, 2009-2010 YLS Council Chair
As the new Chair of the Missouri Bar Young Lawyers' Section, I am bestowed the privilege of setting forth the agenda for our organization for the next Bar year. Recent past chairs have explored important issues such as the funding of public defenders, legal concerns of parents of special needs children, and forging closer relationships between law students and the Bar. However, I believe this year we face one of the most critical issues to date for all lawyers, young and old, in defending the attacks against the non-partisan court plan, known nationwide as the “Missouri Plan.” (More)

Pro Bono Opportunities for Young Lawyers
Winston Churchill once said that, "you make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give." As attorneys, our ability to provide access to justice to the impoverished and the marginalized in our society is our most powerful gift to give. And there is a great need for that gift. In 2002, a Missouri Legal Services’ study found that the organization was only able to serve 25% of those eligible and in need of their services. What happens to the other 75%? The answer to that question depends largely on the efforts of attorneys who are willing to provide pro bono legal services to those in need.
