Judicial Retention

Voters' Information About Judges – St. Louis City

Voting Key

Lawyers were asked to evaluate judges on a variety of judicial qualifications by using the following key:

5 – EXCELLENT
4 – ABOVE AVERAGE
3 – AVERAGE
2 – BELOW AVERAGE
1 – POOR

For each judicial qualification listed – such as fairness – this publication will list the number of lawyers responding in each of the categories listed above. For example, it might indicate that 42 lawyers said a judge was "average," 78 replied that the judge was "above average," etc. An average score based upon the numbers above will also be listed. For example, if an average score of 4.0 is listed under the "fairness" category, it means that lawyers ranked that judge as being "above average" – a "4" on the scale above – in terms of fairness.

In addition, lawyers were asked whether each judge should be retained in office. The numbers of lawyers answering "yes" or "no" to that question are listed.

The survey of lawyers was conducted anonymously, ensuring that lawyers could feel free to provide straightforward, honest responses regarding those judges listed. Lawyers were asked to evaluate a judge only if they had direct and personal knowledge of that judge's qualifications.
