Commission Seeks Applicants for Western District Appellate Vacancy
The Appellate Judicial Commission is accepting applications for the vacancy on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Joseph P. Dandurand. Individuals must file applications by July 29 at 5 pm. Those who applied for either of the two previous Western District vacancies do not need to reapply and will be considered along with new applicants.

The Appellate Judicial Commission will meet on Aug. 18 at the Supreme Court to select a panel of three nominees to fill the vacancy on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, created by the resignation of Judge Joseph P. Dandurand.

Missouri Bar Immigration Law Committee Pro Bono Trafficking Victim Project Volunteer lawyers from Kansas City have been involved in an effort to help victims of labor trafficking in a high-profile Kansas City federal case – assisting victims with T (victims of trafficking) and U (victims of crimes) visa applications. As more victims are identified, additional volunteer lawyers will be needed to represent victims before federal agencies and possibly immigration court. The Missouri Bar is creating several 30-second TV and radio spots as part of its ongoing communications effort to let the public know that lawyers improve their community in numerous ways – by volunteering on boards, commissions, churches, little leagues, etc. You can help the public get a more accurate image of lawyers by filling in the blanks on this one-sentence email form and submitting it with your name to the media relations department.
Committee Proposes Changes to MCLE Ethics Hour Requirement
The Board of Governors in July will consider a proposal from the Special Committee to Consider MCLE Ethics Requirements recommending a change to the ethics/professionalism/malpractice prevention MCLE requirement from the current three hours every three years to two hours every year. The 15 total hour annual requirement would remain the same and the changes would be effective for next year’s reporting period. (Read Proposed Rule Change) (Submit Comments)

Help Assess Legal Needs of Poor, Set Priorities
The four Missouri Legal Services programs are asking lawyers to complete a brief statewide legal needs appraisal survey. The survey – completed by clients, potential clients, judges, private attorneys, community and human services organizations – will help programs assess the legal needs of poor people, distinguish common and distinct legal needs and determine how best to provide services.
