Serving Those Who Served: Legal Issues Facing Veterans, Legal Solutions Involving Lawyers

Thursday, September 19
8:30 – 10 a.m.

1.8 MCLE Hours

After more than a decade of military deployments to fight two wars in the Middle East, many of those who served are hitting bumps in the road in the transition from military to civilian life, and those who remain in the service, often encounter challenging legal issues crossing many different areas of law. Lawyers who are veterans and lawyers who care about those who put their lives on the line will want to hear this panel discussion, beginning with Maj. Kennedy, a chaplain, and often the first point of contact in the human stories that soon transform into legal problems in the lives of these heroes. A revealing discussion is expected discussing issues from housing to debt, from substance abuse to criminal issues, from disability initiation to appeals, and the impact of these challenges have on lives and how the legal community is and can serve those who have served.

The Second Amendment's Right to Keep and Bear Arms: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Issues

10:15 – 11:45 a.m.
1.8 MCLE Hours

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Although a very short amendment, the meaning and breadth of  the Second Amendment and the right it protects continues to trigger contention and debate. From recent cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, to legislation introduced in the most recent term of the Missouri Legislature (including a bill introduced by one of our panelists), that debate continues. Those attending this session will hear (and have a chance to participate) in a discussion among panelists who bring a wealth of knowledge – along with their often opposing viewpoints – to a subject that deserves and will get thoughtful attention.
