The Bar Speaks

Dear Editor:

I read with great nostalgia the re-publication of the speech by Walter Williams on September 26, 1930 at the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar in Cape Girardeau.

Dad was the Chairman of the Annual Meeting and I remember hearing him at later times talk about the success of the meeting, and the fine address by Mr. Williams.

It was not uncommon in those days to have the Annual Meeting in other places than in St. Louis and Kansas City, and I remember there was substantial concern as to whether Cape Girardeau could house the event. A number of lawyers opened their homes to attendees and fortunately, the meeting was a success. Of course, as a result of the large attendance at annual meetings today, housing is not available in the smaller communities. Interestingly enough, and I am sure this is why you reprinted the address, what was said in 1930 is just as applicable today.

Best regards.

Sincerely,
Stephen N. Limbaugh, Sr.
