Missouri Bar Annual Meeting Addresses Cutting-Edge Issues

The death penalty. The balance between privacy and the need for national security. Wouldn’t it be helpful if these crucial issues could be analyzed from a wide range of perspectives rather than being presented in the all-too-familiar cloth of political rhetoric?

Welcome to The Missouri Bar/Missouri Judicial Conference Annual Meeting, where these issues – and many more – are on the agenda. This year’s Annual Meeting is scheduled for September 27-29 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis.

Reporters are invited to cover any of The Missouri Bar’s 31 events, legal education programs and plenary sessions along with the 800 lawyers and judges who will be in St. Louis for the conference.

The meeting will feature four events of special interest to reporters:

“Privacy in the Electronic Age”
9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 28
Is the title an oxymoron? What does the future hold for an increasingly electronic society? Panelists will evaluate privacy issues from many perspectives, including the Department of Homeland Security, commercial data mining and profiling, constitutional rights and civil liberties.

Along with moderator Dan Margolies of the Kansas City Star, panelists are: Maureen Cooney, formerly acting chief director of privacy for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Timothy Spainhour, legal compliance leader for Acxiom Corporation; Neil Richards of the Washington University School of Law; Joseph Onek, senior policy analyst for the Open Society Institute; and J.R. Hobbs of the Kansas City law firm of Wyrsch, Hobbs & Mirakian.

“Death Penalty: Problem? Solution? Both? Neither? A Multidisciplinary Discussion of the Strenghts and Weaknesses of Capital Punishment”
10:40 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 28
Eddie Roth of the Dayton Daily News will pose as legal counsel to a fictional, newly-elected governor. The premise is that the governor has asked to find out how the death penalty works – or doesn’t – in Missouri.

Panelists for this session will include: Samuel Gross of the University of Michigan Law School; Joshua Marquis, vice president of the National District Attorneys Association; Dr. Peter Markie of the University of Missouri-Columbia Philosophy Department; and Charles Jackson, former director of public safety for the State of Missouri.

The Opening Luncheon and Chief Justice’s Address
12:15 – 1:30 p.m., Thursday, September 28
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri, Judge Michael A. Wolff, will deliver the annual “Chief Justice’s Address” at this luncheon.

In addition, the luncheon will feature a ceremony at which Lloyd L. Gaines will posthumously receive an honorary membership in The Missouri Bar. Gaines applied for admission to the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law in 1936 and was denied admission because of his race. It took a U.S. Supreme Court case to reverse the university’s discriminatory policy. Unfortunately, Gaines disappeared before enrolling and never attended law school.

Family members of Mr. Gaines will be present to accept the honorary membership.

“The Real CSI: Real-Life Criminologists Separate the Fake from the Factual”
8:30 – 9:20 a.m., Friday, September 29
The public can’t get enough of television shows such as CSI . . . the intrigue, the good guy analysts, and forensic experts versus the killers. In this program, the myths will be shattered as top criminologists from the Missouri State Highway Patrol analyze actual scenes from the popular network drama and share their insights into forensic work. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer M. Joyce will moderate a panel consisting of Todd Garrison and Brian Hoey, both of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
